Our history of advocating for diverse forms of art ADVOCACY FOR DISABILITY ARTS Building a national disability arts & culture domain 1996 - 2001: Ran Drama Training Classes; for Youth and Adults with developmental disabilities 2001: Produced our first Forum Theatre co-creation; with artists who have developmental disabilities 2002: Produced our first Artist-Community Collaboration ;with artists who have developmental disabilities 2003: Produced our first Documentary Theatre co-creation ;with artists who have developmental disabilities 2005: Produced our second Documentary Theatre co-creation; with artists who have developmental disabilities 2005: Co-edited Canadian Theatre Review Issue 122; Theatre as a Window to Disability 2006 - 2008: Produced The National Disability Arts & Culture Presenters' Network; for dis arts festivals & touring 2008 - 2010: Ran the super successful "Fund Disability Arts" Campaign; for national dis arts investment 2008 - 2012: Coordinated The DisArts Collective Network; for already-established mad, deaf & disabled artists 2009: Presented on the Dis Arts Domain's Funding Needs; at CCA Disability Arts Focus Group 2015: Advocated for Disability-Led, Disability Arts Production; at an AUUS Round Table 2016: Presented An Overview of Disability Arts in Canada; at CAPACOA's Conference 2012: Produced The Beyond Access National Disability Arts & Culture Gathering; in Canmore 2012: Produced DDMAAC: The Deaf, Disability & Mad Arts Alliance of Canada; our national network 2013: Conducted The Beyond Access Outreach & Research Tour; nationally 2013 - 2018: Presented on Dis Arts concerns; at Annual NASO Meetings with the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) 2014: Presented on Barriers to Disability Arts & Culture; at a CCA Lunch & Learn 2015: Conducted a Disability Arts Producers Survey; for DDMAAC 2015: Provided feedback on a draft Disability Arts Strategy; for the CCA ("The best we got.") 2016: Published "Disability Inequity in the Disability Arts Domain" in CTR Issue 165 2017: Presented on Dis Arts Funding; at a Canadian Association of Professional Arts Funders meeting 2017: Delivered a Keynote Address; for URegina's Accessibility & Inclusivity in the Arts Mini-Symposium 2018: Produced DIS/Engaged: DDMAAC's Solidarity Building Retreat; at Banff Centre for the Arts 2019: Ran Dis/Assemble: The Diversifying Disability Arts Campaign; for DDMAAC 2019: Presented on Disability Arts Production Barriers; to CCA Program Officers 2021: Delivered a Guest Lecture on Disability Arts Across Canada; for Dr. Syrus Marcus Ware 2022: Published DDMAAC's Trauma-informed, Culturally-Safe Approach to Artist Accommodation Guide 2023: Presented that same Guide to the sector, with disabled Metis artist, Holliston Logan 2024: Published our practice-focused digital resources on DDMAAC's Knowledge Hub ADVOCACY FOR AESTHETIC INNOVATION IN THE ARTS Using non-normativity to reinvigorate professional artistic practices 2003 - 2005: Co-produced the Performance Creation Canada Network, with Micheal Green 2004: Presented on Forum Theatre as Indigenous Health Education; at The Arts In Healthcare Conference 2005: Presented on Dis Arts in Canada; at the Performance Creation Canada Network's second gathering 2005: Advocated for Disability-Led, Disability Arts Festivals; on an Abilities Arts Festival Panel 2008 - 2012: Produced The Balancing Acts Commissioning Project; with 12 disabled, professional artists 2010 - 2011: Sat on The InterArts Advisory Committee; for the CCA 2016: Presented on Disability-Identified Artistic Practices, at NAC's first accessibility gathering 2017: Organized angry artists, against the missed opportunities NAC imposed on us, at their second gathering 2017: Presented on Disability Arts Aesthetics; at the CINARS @ CAPACOA Conference 2018: Published A Practice-Focused Framework of Disability Arts; for DDMAAC 2019: Showcased Non-Normative Aesthetic Innovation; at Prismatic International Festival Showcase 2023: Produced The Step Right Up Disability Theatre Symposium; for non-disabled inclusive producers 2024: Produced The Step Right Up Digital Disability Theatre Showcase; for DDMAAC 2024: Produced The Whole Story Podcast, on Arts in Indigenous Health, with Dr. Crowshoe & Holliston Logan 2025: co-Produced The Keeping It Together (KIT) Podcast on Indigenous Wellness Models; with Dr. Crowshoe 2025: Provided feedback on a draft Pluralism Policy; for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts 2026: Launched the Decolonizing Disability Campaign 2026: Launched the Producing Disability Aesthetics Webinar Series |
